Implementation of AVI-Enabled Fuel Management Systems at Tesco Distribution Centres

In April 2022, in response to legislative changes impacting fuel tax rebates, Tesco initiated a strategic overhaul of its fuel management processes across its distribution network. The collaboration with OTS Group introduced the EasyFuel+ AVI-enabled fuel management system, aiming to enhance operational efficiencies and achieve cost savings. A pilot trial was conducted at one of Tesco's Distribution Centres to evaluate the system's effectiveness. The trial's success led to a nationwide rollout across 14 Tesco Distribution Centres.
The EasyFuel+ system integrates Automated Vehicle Identification (AVI) technology, ensuring precise recording of fuel usage and securing refuelling operations against unauthorised access. In addition to the bolt-on software, the AVI technology requires specialised hardware to be installed both at the fuel dispensing pumps and on the vehicle fuel tanks, enabling RFID-based communication for fuel transaction authorisation.
The trial included various types of vehicles, including tractor units and refrigerated trailers. The system provided full dispensing control and integrated seamlessly with Tesco's existing fleet management solutions. Key outcomes from the trial included:
- An 84% satisfaction rate among drivers with the new refuelling process
- Marked improvements in the speed and security of fuel transactions.
- Elimination of unauthorised fuel usage.
- Significant cost savings through efficient fuel management.
Encouraged by the positive trial results, Tesco is now implementing the EasyFuel+ system across its Distribution Centres nationwide. The move is a testament to Tesco's commitment to operational efficiency and environmental sustainability.
