New Multiserv™ System for Highland Fuels on Shetland

This project is for Highland Fuels, a fuel distribution business in Scotland. This is on an existing site where the client already had a fuel tank supplying fuel to its clients. The system, however, could only be operated with fuel cards, and they were wanted a system that would also be able to use both credit and debit cards as well.

  • OTS was tasked with decommissioning the old tank, removing any fuel stocks remaining in it, and installing the new OTS tank and dispensing equipment on site in Shetland. A difficult task given its remote location, needing a 10-hour drive to the Scottish mainland port and then a 14-hour ferry crossing to the island with the new tank, to start the switch-over.

  • The new 45,000 litre tank has two compartments. One for 28,800 litres of diesel, and a second compartment for 4,500 litres of gasoline. It is based on a Multiserv™ tank, although a smaller version of what OTS would normally produce. The design is slightly different from the standard due to the weather conditions on Shetland Islands and two enclosures have been built into the side of the tank to house two twin dispensers each dispensing diesel and gasoline, controlled by a haptic fuel controller.

This modern and efficient new fuelling installation will now allow Highland Fuels to take debit and credit card payments, as well as fuel card payments, for their fuel and other services from this site.

  • A lorry mounted crane was used to lift the old tank from its current position into the back of a waiting transport for recycling on the island. The new tank was then loaded into position, and installed electrically and mechanically, even installing an existing water connection already on site. The main challenge in this basically simple job for OTS was obviously logistics. Everything had to be arranged remotely with some services being procured on the island and other services happened to be taken from the UK mainland across the shipment, such as the lorry mounted crane and transporting the new tank and equipment from the OTS manufacturing site in England.

OTS specialises in the design, manufacture and installation of large bulk fuel storage tanks for fuel farms, distribution depots and 24/7 “pop up” filling stations. All tanks are designed in accordance with the COP Regulations and have a design life expectancy of 25 years.
